Learn About Activity Holidays : The Main Types
Styles of activity holidays are the topic for this part of our activity holidays guide.
There are all kinds of activity holidays with a large variety that will be right for anyone. The main types are thrill-seeking, wilderness, winter, cycling, and special interest.
Thrill-seeking trips are some of the most popular available and include activities such as white water rafting, caving and rock climbing. You can choose to focus on one activity or instead opt for a multi-activity holiday in which you’ll spend a day or two on each before moving on to the next. You will learn to challenge your body and mind with many different experiences.
Wilderness holidays involve you spending time in various wilderness areas, such as deserts, jungles, plateau, tundra and mountains. All seven continents can be visited, with the Sahara, Namib and Gobi deserts, the jungles of South and Central America, Northern India and Central Africa, the great mountain ranges of The Andes, Alps, Atlas, Himalaya and Rockies, the Tibetan plateau, the Antarctic and the Outback of Australia, being popular with adventurous travelers. Camping, trekking, learning skills of survival, cultural lessons, learning of various wildlife are all parts of these type of trips.
Some winter activities that are extreme include skiing and snowboarding, but even dog-sledding and snowmobiling are great for the winter. These are often offered in more unusual and unspoiled locations than you would normally see them advertised and allow you to escape the crowds that you would normally come across.
Cycling holidays come in all shapes and sizes; from gently cycling through relatively flat landscapes to fully-supported mountain bike expeditions. Just like mountains for skiing, bicycle trails are graded on a scale due to their difficulty and how the trial is laid out, off or on road.
Special interest holidays are available for those with a real interest and passion in one subject or a range of subjects. Examples of interests catered for in such a way include photography, yoga, archaeology, conservation and language learning. You’ll have an expert in the subject to guide you throughout your trip and will be greatly improved at your chosen subject by the end of it.
