Vice Laws?
Is it morally right to impose Vice Laws on mature adults? Are some Vice Laws morally acceptable but othere unacceptable? Which laws do you agree are right and necessary, and why? Which laws do you think are silly and outdated, and why?
Vice Laws include:
1. Laws against the sale of alcohol, or limiting it to certain days of the week.
2. Laws against gambling.
3. Laws against tattoos and tattoo parlors. (Same for piercings and piercing studios.)
4. Laws against strip clubs.
5. Laws against prostitution.
6. Laws against “soft” drugs, like marijuana.
7. Laws against “hard” drugs, like heroin.
8. Laws against homosexual activity (apprently some people want these, so I thought I’d include it.)
Note that all these are for adults only. How would you feel about imposing any / all of these laws on a nation composed entirely of intelligent, consenting adults? (In other words, none of this “but think of the children!” because that’s not the question.)
The unintended consequence of legislating a moral standard is that people who wish to access your examples must pay a premium price (including the opportunity costs if their activities are discovered by the authorities). As Americans we are also paying the price in the form of a huge tax burden to support a significant inmate population that is incarcerated based on vice crimes.
I think at some point we should come to an understanding that there are some things in this world that are reserved for adults and some that are for children. I know it takes a village to raise a child but child rearing is not the exclusive responsibility of the community (sometimes the other villagers are busy).
So for my two cents I think those things which are consistent with the moral standards of any given community should be allowed without restriction to consenting adults. Children require a little more protection and we should take reasonable steps to screen them from the things they are not developed enough to handle. The role of insulator between the young and the greater community is primarily that of the parent.
Of course, I’m the bleeding heart liberal in the room. I’m sure our neocon friends will tell you that an all powerful government (and government leader) is the answer.
