What does my golf pro want?
I’m having trouble with lag. My golf coach says it’s because my hands are behind my right hip while I make impact with the ball thus saying my hand are behind the ball. He says to get better lag I have to swing with my hands and arms beating my right hip to the ball. So my question is: what is causig my hip to beat my hands? Do I only have to slow down my hips? Or is it because my feet are not both flat on the ground through impact?
So…I’m not so sure about what your coach is saying. If you try and swing with the feeling that your hands beat your right hip to the ball, you will likely come over the top, or drop your arms from the top. If you drop your hands from the top, the hands will beat your right hip to the ball, but your hip turn will likely not be timed correctly. Anyways, from the explanation you gave, there is nothing wrong with your hip turn. The problem lies in your hand position at impact. You are “casting” or “throwing” the clubhead at the ball.
You don’t need to slow down your hip rotation through the ball, and both feet are not supposed to be flat on the ground through impact. If your “coach” is telling you that you need to slow down your hip rotation and to keep both feet on the ground through impact, find a new coach. A professional one. The evidence that those two things are incorrect is in the swings of top PGA Tour players, such as Tiger Woods.
To correct your faults without seeing your swing is pretty much impossible, and will likely do more harm than good. One thing that may help your “cast” move is to feel the sensation that you hold your wrist hinge/ wrist cock from the top, all the way down towards the ball until you cannot hold it any longer while still making solid contact. Also, maybe try to feel that at impact, the logo on your glove faces the target and your hands are in front of the club head.
The best thing to do is to get yourself to a professional golf instructor (certified with the CPGA or PGA) and take some lessons.
